Vibration, air-pulse or sonic waves?

External devices use three main technologies, and the right one depends on how you prefer to be stimulated:

  • Vibration (LELO Dot): direct contact with a vibrating tip. A narrow tip concentrates the sensation on a small area for precise, targeted use.
  • Air-pulse (Satisfyer Curvy 1+): rhythmic changes in air pressure inside a soft nozzle, without direct vibration on the skin. Many people find it gentler on sensitive tissue. The Curvy 1+ also has a vibration mode that can be used alone or with air-pulse.
  • Sonic waves (LELO Sona 2 Cruise): sonic waves that LELO designs to reach beyond the surface of the skin, for a deeper sensation.

1. Best for precise stimulation: LELO Dot

The Dot is built around a narrow tip designed for precise, targeted stimulation, in a compact body that is easy to hold. Its soft, bendable tip follows an elliptical path that LELO calls Infinite Loop, with eight vibration settings. It uses body-safe silicone, LELO describes it as fully waterproof, and it runs for up to 2 hours, typical of its class. Its main limits are noise, with a stated maximum of 60 dB, louder than the air-pulse alternatives below, and a very focused design that is less versatile than a broader head.

Choose it if you know you prefer focused, pinpoint stimulation. Skip it if you prefer a broader or indirect sensation.

Also consider: Satisfyer Curvy 1+ (air-pulse and vibration)

The Curvy 1+ combines air-pulse stimulation, through changes in air pressure, with a vibration motor, usable together or separately, in a curved body that rests comfortably in the hand. It can also be paired with the optional Satisfyer Connect app. It is rated IPX7 and is one of the most accessible models in our catalogue. Its short run time (about 60 minutes, for about 4 hours of charging, according to Satisfyer) is its main limit, and Satisfyer publishes no noise level for it. It ranks seventh in our air-pulse ranking. For a detailed head-to-head, see our LELO Dot vs Satisfyer Curvy 1+ comparison.

Also consider: LELO Sona 2 Cruise (sonic waves)

The Sona 2 Cruise uses sonic waves rather than vibration, with a Cruise Control system that maintains power under firmer pressure, in a one-piece silicone body. LELO states a maximum noise level of 60 dB. It ranks second in our air-pulse ranking, which also covers sonic-wave devices.

Buying guide: how to choose an external device

Precision or coverage

A narrow tip concentrates stimulation on a small area; a broader head or a nozzle spreads it. If you are unsure, a device with several intensity levels lets you start gently.

Sensitivity

If direct vibration feels too intense, indirect technologies such as air-pulse are often more comfortable. Start at the lowest intensity and stop if you feel pain or irritation.

Noise and run time

Most compact devices sit between around 43 and 50 dB, comparable to a quiet library or a quiet office. The LELO Dot is louder at its highest settings, with a stated maximum of 60 dB. Around 2 hours of run time is typical; about 1 hour is on the short side.

Materials and lubricant compatibility

All three devices use body-safe, non-porous silicone on the parts that touch the skin. Learn what to look for in our guide to body-safe silicone and materials.

  • Use a water-based lubricant: silicone-based lubricants can degrade silicone surfaces over time. Oil-based products are harder to clean off and are generally not recommended by manufacturers.
  • Clean the tip or nozzle after every use; on air-pulse models with a detachable nozzle, remove it to clean underneath.
  • Let the device dry completely before charging and store it in a breathable pouch.

How we chose

We compared each model on the criteria used across IntimPicks: acoustics, body-safe materials, waterproofing, battery and charging, ergonomics, and hygiene. For external vibrators we also weighted precision. Specifications come from manufacturer data and published product documentation; noise levels are approximate. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a clitoral vibrator and an air-pulse device?

A vibrator transmits vibration through direct contact. An air-pulse device creates changes in air pressure inside a nozzle, so the stimulation is indirect. Both are designed for external use.

Is a small vibrator less powerful?

Not necessarily. A small, narrow tip concentrates vibration on a smaller area, which can feel more intense than a larger head at the same setting.

What does IPX7 mean?

IPX7 indicates protection against temporary immersion in water up to one metre for up to 30 minutes. It makes thorough cleaning easy, but it does not mean the device is designed for prolonged use underwater. The Curvy 1+ is rated IPX7; LELO describes the Dot and the Sona 2 Cruise as waterproof without stating an IP rating.
