The LELO Sona 3 Cruise is the latest version of LELO’s compact sonic-wave device for external stimulation. It keeps the principle of the LELO Sona 2 Cruise, sonic waves delivered without direct contact with Cruise Control, and adds SmoothRise intensity transitions, a Bluetooth connection to the LELO app and a travel lock. This review is based on LELO’s official product page and user manual; we have not run laboratory or acoustic tests.
What we like
- SenSonic waves with Cruise Control under pressure
- SmoothRise: gradual steps between intensity levels

Design & Ergonomics
The Sona 3 Cruise measures 112 × 51 × 55 mm and weighs 128 g, according to LELO, almost the same footprint as the Sona 2 Cruise, so it rests easily in the palm. The body is covered in a soft, smooth silicone that LELO describes as softer than on its previous models, and the opening sits at the top of the curved shape.
Three buttons handle everything without a phone: + and − set the intensity, and a mode button switches the device on and cycles through ten modes. Holding + and − together switches it off and locks it, which prevents it from turning on in a bag; LELO ships it locked, and connecting the charger unlocks it.
Sonic Waves, Cruise Control & SmoothRise
LELO’s SenSonic technology transmits sonic pulses through the open mouth, without direct contact, which LELO designs to spread the sensation over a wider surface than a vibrating tip. LELO lists a frequency of 63 Hz, the same as the Sona 2 Cruise.
Cruise Control, patented by LELO, keeps the pulsations constant during use: when the device is pressed more firmly against the body, it adds power instead of letting the intensity drop. New on this generation, SmoothRise moves between intensity levels gradually rather than in sudden jumps. LELO publishes no motor power figures, so we do not compare the Sona 3 Cruise’s power with other devices.
LELO App & Long-Distance Play
The app is optional: the ten on-device modes work without a phone. Holding the mode button for three seconds switches the device on with Bluetooth active, and the LELO app (iOS and Android) then offers three regular modes, including a manual one, and two app-exclusive advanced modes. These two are the ones LELO adds to the ten on-device modes when it lists twelve settings. The app also lets you save settings for offline use and set the automatic power-off between 10 and 20 minutes.
Love Bridge, in the same app, opens a private chat room where two people can take turns controlling each other’s LELO app-connected devices at a distance. As with any connected device, read the app’s privacy policy before pairing it.
Body-Safe Materials
LELO lists the materials as body-safe silicone and ABS plastic, with a smooth finish. LELO states that its products meet the ISO 3533 international standard for the safety of these devices; to understand what material claims mean and what to look for, see our guide to body-safe silicone and materials.
LELO warns that hand creams and silicone-based lubricants can make the silicone permanently tacky, so use a water-based lubricant only.
Noise Level & Discretion
LELO lists a maximum noise level below 60 dB, reached at the highest settings. We show it as “~60 dB”, the stated ceiling, the same rule we apply to the Sona 2 Cruise and the other stated maximums: around 60 dB is comparable to a normal conversation, so the Sona 3 Cruise is not a discreet device at its strongest settings. Lower settings are quieter, but LELO does not publish a figure for them.
If discretion is a priority, the devices in our quiet devices ranking, all stated at around 45 dB or less, are better choices. The device switches off automatically after 20 minutes without use. To put these figures in context, see our noise and decibel guide.
Battery Life & Waterproofing
LELO lists a Li-ion 520 mAh battery, up to 2 hours of use and a charging time of up to 2 hours at 5 V with the supplied USB charging cord, plus up to 90 days on standby. The LED on the interface pulses while charging, glows steadily when full and blinks white when the battery runs low. A satin storage pouch is included.
LELO describes the Sona 3 Cruise as 100% waterproof and suitable for the bath and shower, but it does not give an IP rating. We therefore list it as “Waterproof” without a rating, unlike the IPX7 devices in our catalogue.
Hygiene & Care
- Before and after each use: wash the body and the mouth with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap or a toy cleaner, then rinse thoroughly. LELO advises against cleaners containing alcohol, petrol or acetone.
- Inside the mouth: rinse until no soap remains, then let it dry completely.
- Charging: make sure the charging port is dry before connecting the USB cord, and only use the charger supplied by LELO.
- Storage: store it clean, dry and locked in its satin pouch, away from direct sunlight and from products made of other materials.

Who It’s For (and Who Should Skip It)
Who it’s for
The Sona 3 Cruise suits people looking for intense external stimulation without direct contact who also want the option of app control: sonic waves with Cruise Control, SmoothRise transitions, ten on-device modes, a travel lock, long-distance play through Love Bridge and a waterproof silicone body in a compact 128 g shape.
Who should skip it
If discretion matters, choose a device from our quiet devices ranking, all stated at around 45 dB or less: LELO states a maximum just under 60 dB for the Sona 3 Cruise. If you will never use the app, the LELO Sona 2 Cruise offers the same sonic technology, size and run time; see our Sona 2 Cruise vs Sona 3 Cruise comparison. For a gentler sensation from the same brand, see the LELO SILA Cruise. You can also answer up to four questions in our Device Finder.
Verdict
The LELO Sona 3 Cruise earns a 4.5 rating and third place in our air-pulse and sonic category, just behind the Sona 2 Cruise at the same rating. Its strengths are documented by LELO: sonic waves with Cruise Control, SmoothRise transitions between intensity levels, ten on-device modes plus optional app control with Love Bridge, a travel lock and a waterproof silicone body in a compact 128 g shape.
The trade-offs: a stated maximum just under 60 dB, among the loudest of the compact devices we list, no IP rating, and a run time of up to 2 hours, unchanged from the Sona 2 Cruise.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the LELO Sona 3 Cruise and the Sona 2 Cruise?
Both use LELO’s sonic waves and Cruise Control, with almost the same size, the same 520 mAh battery and up to 2 hours of use. The Sona 3 Cruise adds SmoothRise transitions between intensity levels, Bluetooth control through the LELO app with Love Bridge for long-distance play, and a travel lock; the Sona 2 Cruise works without an app, with twelve settings on the device.
How loud is the LELO Sona 3 Cruise?
LELO lists a maximum noise level below 60 dB, which we show as ~60 dB, its stated ceiling. That is comparable to a normal conversation at its highest settings; lower settings are quieter, but LELO does not publish a figure for them.
Do you need the app to use the LELO Sona 3 Cruise?
No. The ten modes and the intensity buttons work without a phone. The LELO app is optional: it adds app-exclusive modes, saved settings, an adjustable automatic power-off and Love Bridge for control at a distance.
